Exploring The Lexus Head-Up Display

With the changes in the automotive industry recently, we are seeing more screens and display info for almost every car. One technology that’s advanced a lot in recent years is Heads-Up Displays, which have gone from a basic addon to a fantastic feature. Most manufacturers now include a HUD option, and that includes Lexus.

So how useful is the Lexus Heads-Up Display, and is it a feature worth getting? In this article, we’ll cover how the Lexus HUD works and which models include this feature. We’ll also include the cost of adding a HUD to certain Lexus vehicles and if we think it’s an option worth getting.

Let’s get started!

Is the Lexus HUD worth buying?

How does the Lexus Heads Up Display work?

Depending on your model of Lexus, the Heads-Up Display will show a variety of information. On most Lexus models, the HUD is full color and covers a 10-inch display. You can customize certain aspects of the HUD (we’ll cover this in the next system), and on F Sport models, you have access to unique information.

The general Lexus HUD shows speed, the current gear selected, and RPM numbers. On certain models, such as the LS, your HUD will include safety information, such as cross-traffic alerts. On F Sport Handling models, you can access performance data such as G-forces.

How to access and customize the Lexus Heads-Up Display

To turn on the HUD in your Lexus, there are two options, depending on your model. In some cars, there is a button on your dashboard, usually to the left of your steering wheel (next to the trunk open button). Pressing this will turn on your Heads-Up Display. On most Lexus models, the HUD function can be accessed through the central touchscreen, in the ‘settings’ and then the ‘customization’ menu.

In the touchscreen menu, you can change the brightness and the angle of the display to best suit your driving position. You can also change the size of the HUD and, most importantly, select the information you want to see.

Customization options are different for each Lexus model, but these include items like climate controls, driving modes, and Apple maps info.

Does every Lexus model come with a Heads-Up Display?

Across the Lexus range, only a selection of the highest-spec models include a Heads-Up Display. For some models, the HUD is a standard feature, and for other vehicles, it’s an optional extra. In the next section, we’ve split out each model to show this info.

We’ve also included the Lexus models without Heads-Up Display, so if you want to make sure your car has that option, these are the models to avoid.

FAQs

Can you add a HUD to an existing Lexus model?

You cannot install a Lexus HUD system onto an existing model. There are some aftermarket HUD systems available, but the full Lexus system must be added during vehicle build

Can you change the brightness of your Lexus HUD?

Within your central touchscreen, there is an option to change the brightness of the Heads-Up Display

Is the Lexus HUD visible during the day?

Yes – even in daylight the heads-up display is easy to read

Is the Heads-Up Display worth selecting for your Lexus?

Modern cars are quickly becoming a fully digital space, and although we don’t like that move overall, a Heads-Up Display that works is a great feature to have. Thankfully the Lexus setup is one of the better versions of a HUD that we’ve seen, and I’d strongly recommend getting this option.

A Heads-Up Display isn’t going to give you every piece of info you need, but it’s definitely a benefit to help you focus on your driving. It’s easy to become distracted with all the screens we have in modern cars, and most drivers need to focus more on the road and less on controlling everything from a touchscreen. With a HUD, you can see all the important info without taking your eyes off the road, and that’s worth the cost, in our opinion.

The way Lexus offers a HUD is useful too. You don’t need an expensive options pack (with the exception of the RZ 450e model), so if you want this feature, it’s less than $1,000 or free on high-spec cars. That $1,000 might seem like a lot of money, but that’s equivalent to the costs of a BMW HUD these days.
