Which Audi Models Have A Heads Up Display?

Current Audi models are packed with technology, and the last few years have seen Audi develop some of the best interiors in the industry. We expect more tech than ever before in our cars, and Audi has delivered with their latest Heads Up Display system.

As great as the Heads Up Display is, Audi doesn’t include this feature on every model yet – so depending on the vehicle you want, will you have access to the HUD option? We’ll answer that question here with a full list of every current Audi that includes a Heads-Up Display and how much it costs to add as an extra.

We’ll also cover how the HUD works on your Audi and if we think it’s value for money. Finally, if you want to see how the Audi system compares to its rivals, check out our thoughts on the BMW and Mercedes systems here.

Let’s get started!

What is the Audi Heads-Up-Display?

Like most HUD systems, this feature allows you to view key information projected onto your windscreen, just above the steering wheel. With the Audi HUD you can view your current speed, and navigational information, without taking your eyes off the road ahead.

The information displayed can be customized, along with the visibility and height of your HUD, to make sure it’s always visible when you are driving.

How to access the HUD on your Audi

To access the Heads Up Display, in your main Audi infotainment screen, go to settings and ‘display and brightness’. In that menu, you’ll find ‘Head-Up Display’, and from there, you can adjust a number of parameters to tailor your HUD. These options include changing the height and brightness of your HUD, and the information displayed.

Does every Audi model come with the Heads-Up Display?

No – only some Audi models include the Heads Up Display. Across the range, there are some models that come with the HUD as a standard feature (with no additional cost) and a handful of cars where the HUD is an optional extra.

Below we’ve covered those Audi models where the HUD is standard, along with the cost to add it to other vehicles in the Audi range. Finally, we’ve also covered those cars that currently have no HUD option from Audi.

Which Audi models have the Heads-Up Display as standard?

Across the current Audi range, every Prestige spec Audi includes the Heads-Up Display as a standard feature. This includes the latest e-tron and e-tron GT models, and SUV models like the Q5 Prestige.

The Prestige trim is the highest level for each Audi and includes most features as standard, so we’d expect to see the HUD option here. On some models, such as the Q4 e-tron, Audi has released their advanced ‘Augmented Reality’ HUD, which adds even more details.

Which Audi models have the Heads-Up Display as an optional extra?

Within the current Audi range, the majority of Audi RS models include the option to add a Heads-Up Display to your car. This includes the latest RS 6 and RS Q8 models, along with the A8 L and S8 luxury sedans.

It’s strange to see Audi include the HUD as an optional extra on these models, as some are over $100,000 without options. This is similar to the BMW HUD structure, with most M models including the HUD at a cost too.

The current RS 7 model includes the HUD as an optional extra, costing $2,750

If you want to add the HUD to your RS Audi, you can’t include this option on its own. Like most features on luxury cars, the Heads-Up Display is included in an ‘options pack’ – with the cost for each pack shown below.

  • RS Q8 – $2,800 (Executive Package)
  • RS 3 – $2,750 (RS Technology Package)
  • RS 5 Coupe – $3,000 (RS Driver Assistance Package)
  • RS 5 Sportback – $3,000 (RS Driver Assistance Package)
  • RS 6 Avant – $2,750 (Executive Package)
  • RS 7 – $2,750 (Executive Package)
  • A8 L – $4,100 (Comfort Plus Package)
  • S8 – $4,700 (Comfort Plus Package)

Which Audi models don’t include the Heads-Up Display?

Across the current Audi model range, the below cars don’t include a Heads-Up Display feature. This means you can’t add the HUD even as an optional extra. Most of the cars below are the Premium and Premium Plus models, so if you want a Heads-Up Display your only choice here is the Prestige model.

A few surprises in this list include the current R8 models. These are some of Audi’s most expensive cars, so it’s strange to see them without the option for a HUD. Most of this is due to the R8 being an older model, and whatever Audi’s next supercar becomes, it’s almost guaranteed to include a Heads-Up Display.

Is the Heads Up Display worth buying?

If we were buying a new Audi we’d strongly consider choosing the Prestige trim to get the Heads-Up Display feature. If you’ve never used a HUD you might think this is another automotive gimmick, that has no real value – but it’s a crucial feature to have in plenty of situations.

Navigating with the HUD in urban areas is particularly useful, allowing you to focus on your directions and the traffic. Without the Heads-Up Display you still have access to Audi’s excellent virtual cockpit, but having the option to keep your eyes on the road and get the info you need is a great help.

On the RS models that HUD cost might seem excessive (over $2,000 on every model) but those packs include a number of helpful features. If you were only interested in the HUD we’d probably be put off by the cost, but if you look at the full packs, it’s reasonable value for money from Audi.
