The X7 sits at the top of the BMW SUV range, alongside models like the XM and iX. This 7-seat premium SUV is a combination of luxury and performance, and like most large SUV models, the X7 comes with some pretty impressive wheels.
From entry-level 21-inch wheels up to 23-inch options, tires can be expensive on the X7, and with plenty of power, you need the right tire to handle it. In this guide, we want to help you find the best tires for your X7, and we’ve covered our favorite options for every need.
From performance tires to winter tires and even a few budget options, we’ve got your covered. In the sections below you can find tires for every model in the X7 range and our favorite options for each model.
Let’s get started!
What tires are available on the BMW X7?
Across the BMW X7 range, there are a number of different tire sizes. The below table covers each different tire and the X7 models that include each tire spec.
Model | Front Tire Specs | Rear Tire Specs |
X7 40i / M50i / M60i | 285 / 45 / R21 | 285 / 45 / R21 |
X7 40i / M50i / M60i | 275 / 40 / R22 | 315 / 35 / R22 |
X7 40i / M60i | 275 / 35 / R23 | 315 / 30 / R23 |
How Do I Check My Tire Specs?
Along the edge of every tire, you will find the specs. They are usually shown like in the image below, with three numbers and a letter:
- Width (the larger number, usually between 200-400)
- Profile (often between 30-100)
- Tire Construction (a single letter)
- Rim Size (the size of your wheel, often between 15-25)
There may be extra details after the rim size, which can include:
- Load Rating (a number between 90-120)
- Speed Rating (a single letter)
What Do My Tire Specs Mean?
Tire specs provide information on your tire dimensions and performance:
- Width: measured in millimeters, this is the width of the tire from side to side
- Profile: this is the height of the tire’s sidewall, as a ratio against the width. In simple terms, the larger this value, the ‘thicker’ the tire
- Construction: The structure of the tire. Most modern tires are radial (shown with an R), but some run-flat tires will have a different designation.
- Rim Size: the diameter of your wheel, measured in inches
- Load Rating: How much weight the tire can support. This number is from a load index chart, and the higher the number, the more weight a tire can cope with
- Speed Rating: A letter designating the maximum safe speed a tire can handle. Common speed ratings are H (130mph), V (149 mph), W (168 mph), and Y (186 mph)
What tires are best for your BMW X7?
In the next section, we’ve covered our favorite tires for each X7 model. We’ve broken these down into a few categories, including the best performance tires and best winter tires. Remember, it’s important to check your tire specs to find the matching tires below.
21 Inch Tires
the BMW X7 range comes with one option for 21-inch tires. These are the ‘entry-level’ tires, and the smallest wheels you can get for current X7 models. Front and rear tires are the same profile and width:
- Front: 285 / 45 / R21
- Rear: 285 / 45 / R21
Performance Tire: Pirelli P Zero
First up, for 21-inch models, the best performance tire is the Pirelli P Zero. When discussing performance tires, two names are at the top of most lists; the Michelin Pilot Sport, and this tire, the Pirelli P Zero.
With incredible handling in dry and wet conditions, this is the tire if you want to push your X7. Fuel economy and road noise are worse than most all-season tires, but the performance of the P Zero makes up for this.
At 21 inches the P Zero is an expensive tire, but if you want a no-compromise tire to perform at the limit of your X7, this is our favorite choice.
All-Season Tire: Continental CrossContact LX Sport
If you need a tire for the whole year, you need a great all-season option. For your X7, our favorite has to be the Continental CrossContact. This LX Sport version of Continental’s popular all-season tire has solid handling in the wet and still delivers slid gas mileage.
It won’t match the handling of the P Zero tire, but for everyday use, the CrossContact will suit most drivers. These aren’t budget tires so a full set will be expensive, but these tires should last 30,000 miles at least.
Winter Tire: Pirelli Scorpion Winter
If you want to use your X7 in the winter, all-season tires will be ok for most conditions, but winter tires are a step above. For heavy snow and ice, it’s vital to have the best tires available, but 21-inch wheels don’t offer many options.
Thankfully, one of our favorite winter tires, the Pirelli Scorpion Winter, is available for your X7. If you’ve seen our X4 and X5 articles, you’ll know how highly we rate these tires, and they are our top pick for the largest BMW SUV too.
Like every winter tire, the Scorpion isn’t going to match the likes of the CrossContact in the summer. Road noise and fuel economy suffer here, but these tires aren’t designed to be efficient. They are designed to be the most capable tires in the snow and ice, and for that, the Scorpion Winter is an excellent tire.
Budget Tire: Vredestein Quatrac Pro
If you’re on a budget for your X7 tires, there are a couple of options for you. 21-inch tires aren’t usually a cheap option, but at these specs, the Vredestein Quatrac is easily the best budget tire available. As an all-season tire, you get impressive performance in the dry and wet and reasonable fuel economy too.
This isn’t on the level of tires from the premium brands, but you’ll save between $50-$100 per tire with the Quatrac Pro. Overall, we’d still go with a Continental CrossContact, but the Vredestein is a great alternative.
22 Inch Tires
The BMW X7 range comes with one option for 22-inch tires, with a different front and rear profile. If you have an X7 and you’re unsure of tire specs, it’s best to check the numbers on both your front and rear tires to confirm.
- Front: 275 / 40 / R22
- Rear: 315 / 35 / R22
At these specs, there are no budget tires we like for the X7
Performance Tire: Pirelli P Zero
We chose the Pirelli P Zero as our performance tire for 21-inch wheels, and there’s no change for the 22-inch models. With almost unparalleled performance in the wet and dry, the P Zero will give your X7 more grip than any other available tires.
Like the 21-inch tires, a set of P Zeros are an investment, so don’t expect budget costs here. You get what you pay for with these tires though, and if you want the best handling for your X7, these are your best option.
All-Season Tire: Continental PremiumContact 6 SSR
If you need a tire for the whole year, 22-inch models have the option for Continental PremiumContacts. We’ve included the SSR version here, as this is the Run Flat option. Some of you will want to avoid run-flat tires, and I’m not a fan, but they are useful to have without a spare tire option.
Run-flat tires are usually a disappointment when it comes to fuel usage and road noise, but the PremiumContact is one of the best run-flat tires we’ve used. Unfortunately, the extra cost of a run-flat tire is shown here, and a set of PremiumContacts will set you back a few hundred dollars per tire.
Winter Tire: Pirelli Scorpion Winter Run-Flat
At 22 inches, winter tires are hard to find. If you do need a solid set of tires for snow and ice on your X7, the best tire by far is the Pirelli Scorpion Winter. As our all-season pick, we’ve chosen the run-flat option. It’s more expensive (if you want the standard option we have a link for those below) but it will help with any tire damage.
Like all winter tires, fuel efficiency is poor here, but that’s to be expected. If you’re planning to add winter tires to your X7, we’d always recommend swapping back to all seasons in the summer too.
23 Inch Tires
Finally, on the highest spec X7 models, you have the option for 23-inch tires. These come in one set, with different front and rear tires:
- Front: 275 / 35 / R23
- Rear: 315 / 30 / R23
At these specs, only performance tires are available
Performance Tire: Pirelli P Zero
Our only recommended tire for 23-inch X7 models is the Pirelli P Zero. Like the 21-inch and 22-inch models, the P Zero is the standout performance tire here and our top choice. A full set of P Zero tires will be expensive, but there are no low-cost tires at 23 inches.
The Best Tire Accessories
If you’re looking for a new set of tires for your X7, you’ll want to make sure you look after them too. Keeping your tires clean, inflated, and stored safely is vital, so I wanted to share a few of the items I keep to make sure my tires are in the best condition.
These accessories include places to store and protect your tires when they are not in use, which is ideal if you have a set of winter and summer tires. You’ll also need a tire inflator kit, and it’s important to keep tire sealant in case you end up with a puncture.
Finally, keeping your tires clean is overlooked by so many drivers. I’ll see people spend hundreds on keeping their car paint and interior surfaces in top condition, but you need to make sure your wheels and tires are in the best shape too!

Summary
Overall, there aren’t many wheel choices for the BMW X7, and starting at 21 inches, there aren’t many tires available. For most X7 drivers you’ll probably want to go for the performance option, and for this reason, I expect the P Zero will be popular. It’s a tire I’ve used twice on previous BMW models, and the handling is excellent.
All-season tires offer a wider range. We’ve picked our favorites above, but there are some great runner-up tires too. It’s important to check how long each tire should last, as year-round tires need to have a great life.
