The Audi Convenience Package Explained

The Convenience Package from Audi is their entry-level ‘general’ pack, available on most low and mid spec models. Unlike most Audi packages, which are often focused on a single area of the car, the Convenience Package gives you a range of features, from lighting upgrades to driving assistance.

Like most optional packs from luxury car manufacturers, Audi doesn’t explain their packs that well when you’re looking to buy a car. We’ve looked at plenty of optional extras from all kinds of manufacturers, and we wanted to help you understand these packs better. To try and answers your questions on the Audi Convenience Package, we’ve put together a guide to the pack features on each model and the cost.

The Convenience package has a few basic features across most Audi models, such as the heated steering wheel and auto-dimming side mirrors. A few of the more advanced options are where the real value is, so let’s run through a few key features:

Audi Advanced Key

The Audi Advanced Key works in a similar way to many automotive smart keys, with some additional features. With the advanced key, your Audi will automatically detect the key when it’s within a few meters and unlock the car. You can set the advanced key to unlock all doors, or just the driver’s door if you want.

Keyless entry isn’t the only benefit here. With the Advanced Key, your Audi will ‘remember’ your seat and steering wheel locations. This means that if you have more than one driver, your Advanced Key will tell the car to automatically adjust the driver seat and steering wheel to your settings.

In general, the Advanced Key is a feature available on most luxury cars, so it’s not a highlight of the Convenience package. It’s still a great feature to have though, and will probably end up being one of the options you benefit from the most.

Adaptive Cruise Assist With Lane Guidance

With Adaptive Cruise Assist, the car will automatically maintain speed and distance from the car in front, with a combination of braking and accelerating. Like most adaptive cruise control systems, the Audi feature works with radars in the front bumper, to check distances and react to any changes. It’s not completely autonomous though and is best used on highways.

Alongside the Adaptive Cruise Assist, the Lane Guidance feature will keep the car within a lane (only on highways). This feature will only work at higher speeds, and when the car senses you have started to leave a lane, it’ll adjust the car’s position and ‘pulse’ the steering wheel to alert you.

As a combination, the Adaptive Cruise Assist with Lane Guide does make driving on the freeway a lot easier. For some owners, this will be a vital feature, and worth the Convenience package price alone, but it won’t be as useful to everyone.

Audi Side Assist with Pre-Sense Rear

Another feature of the Audi Convenience Pack to help with driving is the Side Assist, with Pre-Sense. The Side Assist function uses radars on the side of the car to check for any approaching vehicles, in case you need to switch lanes. When a vehicle gets within range of either radar, a warning light appears on the relevant side mirror.

This option also includes Pre-Sense Rear. This system uses a different set of sensors to monitor how close objects are to the rear of the vehicle. If there is likely to be a collision, the Pre-Sense Rear activates some safety features, such as adding tension to the seat belts to protect passengers.

The Side Assist feature is useful to prevent any side collisions when changing lanes on the freeway, but it can be annoying when you’re sitting in a lane. Fortunately, the system can be turned off though. The Pre-Sense function can be vital in the event of a collision, but hopefully, you’ll never have to benefit from this feature!

Top view camera system with Virtual 360 view

The Audi Top View Camera system is undoubtedly one of the best parts of the Convenience Pack. Like most 3D camera systems on modern vehicles, the Audi system uses a handful of cameras facing every direction to create a single, 360-degree image of your surroundings.

This image can be viewed top-down, to give you a guide for parking and reversing around obstacles. It’s particularly useful for navigating past objects that would usually be in your blind spot, and low to the ground.

The system isn’t perfect, and like all 3D cameras it can distort the image slightly, but the Top View Camera still gives you a clear outline of your surroundings. In combination with parking sensors and reversing cameras, you’ll be able to navigate almost any space in your Audi.

How Much Does It Cost?

The cost of the Convenience Package depends on the model, but as a rough guide for the US markets:

  • Q3 – $1,400
  • Q4 – $1,800
  • Q5 – $1,100
  • Q7 – $2,000
  • Q8 – $1,950
  • A3 – $1,900
  • A4 – $2,500
  • A5 – $1,800
  • A6 – $2,300
  • A7 – $2,300

Is the Convenience Package Worth It?

Overall, this is a well-rounded and fairly low-cost package for Audi. The role of the Convenience Package is clearly to introduce some of the standard features from higher spec models, like heated seats and adaptive cruise control, onto the lower spec cars.

If you’re looking at one of the Audi models with an option for the Convenience Pack, we’d strongly recommend it, especially if you’re expecting to cover a lot of miles. Having features like adaptive cruise control and parking assist are honestly options that we couldn’t live without, and if you’re looking for a preowned Audi, check it has the Convenience Pack included.
